DMACK Takes First Italian Victory And Championship Lead

DMACK secured its first-ever overall victory on the Italian Rally Championship this weekend after Umberto Scandola and Guido D'Amore dominated Rally Adriatico – the result moving them into the overall lead of the championship.

Scandola powered his DMACK-equipped Skoda Fabia R5 to a record sixth consecutive win on the event – the penultimate round of the series. He scored five stage victories, inheriting the lead during the first leg, and extended the gap to 12.3 seconds at the finish. Rally Adriatico, based in the centre of Italy around the historic medieval cities of Cingoli and Jesi, features packed gravel roads through the region’s vineyard hills.

Scandola used DMACK’s DMG+2 gravel tyres to beat off competition from the championship regulars, using tyres from four other top manufacturers. DMACK has undertaken a development programme with Scandola and his ŠKODA Italia Motorsport team during 2018 and has now demonstrated it has rally-winning products which are available to all competitors in Italy via its dealer Monza Gomme.

The last two rounds benefit from 50% extra championship points, so when main championship rival Paolo Andreucci dropped off the leaderboard after rolling on the last stage, Scandola’s maximum score moved him into a 0.5 point championship lead. He now heads to the final round, his home event of Due Valli in Verona, for the final battle to decide the championship title.

It was a double DMACK-victory as Stefano Guerra and Silvio Stefanelli took overall honours in Group N and finished 12th overall in a Subaru Impreza.

Dick Cormack, DMACK managing director, said: “After a number of strong results during the season, it’s fantastic for Umberto to finally get his first rally victory using DMACK tyres. Our team in Italy has worked hard during the season in partnership with ŠKODA Italia Motorsport and the final round is going to be an exciting prospect as Umberto battles for the championship title.”

Umberto Scandola said: “We really wanted this victory. After a lot of work in the last few months with our team and DMACK, the rally win now puts us in the lead of the championship. This year Rally Adriatico has been even more challenging than in the past, we have had to fight against very tough opponents and the pace has always been very hard. But the tyres proved both strong and fast to deal with the stages and give us the performance we needed to win.”
